Sitiawan’s Delicious Snacks: Cheong Cia Gong Pian + James Cendol

We almost forgotten about our fun Sitiawan road trip last year. Blame the over-brimmed archives 😛
We were actually in Sitiawan for 2 nights for a dear friend’s wedding and we took the chance to check out some of Sitiawan’s famous delicacies + snacks. Specials thanks to Larry for bringing us around.

Gong Pian

I have no clue what are those till I visited Sitiawan for the first time. Mention Sitiwan & FooChow (or Hock Chew) together and the picture of the great delicacies will appear, particularly the famous biscuit known as Gong Pian. This humble biscuit creation is an iconic snack that represented Sitiawan; said that the original recipe was brought to this place by the early Hock Chew settlers from China.
Where’s the best Gong Pian in town?

#1 Cheong Cia Gong Pian

Our friend brought us here: Cheong Cia Gong Pian
a small corner shop nestled on the main road in town.

We start to see people queueing up to get their share of Gong Pian. Waiting for the freshly baked biscuits!

The whole family (young and old) is working together to put up some good bites for their customers.

Ingredients? Onions with lard!

Here’s a glimpse into the hot oven with the gong pian baking on the walls. The oven they used are like those used to cook naan. The cooking/ baking process takes about 90 minutes.

The salty taste of the biscuit came from the salted onion fried in lard. So irresistibly sinful but so delicious!
Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Tasty bites of the fragrant onions and lard.

Hock Chew Fo Pa or Torch biscuit is one of the Hock Chew clan specialties. The biscuits are made out of twisted dough which are then baked until crunchy. There’s also some slight sweetness taste in it. Must buy!

#2 James Cendol

Time for some icy cool fare. Larry brought us to one of his favourite stall located along Jalan Lumut which sells the best cendol in Sitiawan. Fret not if you couldn’t locate James Cendol stall as it’s located right on front of the temple on Jalan Lumut, near to The Store hypermarket.

James Cendol – RM2.00 per bowl
Right amount of sweetness drenched with aromatic coconut milk + gula melaka. Though the ice was not fine enough, we were still pretty happy with our share 🙂

  1. The original James Cendol. I have tried the one in KL and I like it. I wonder how the original taste in comparison:D

    1. V have yet to check out their branch in KL haha ;P

  2. Sitiawan is my home town and Gong Piang is definitely the best sinful biscuit ever… it is so famous that during chinese festivals, it will be sold out immediately and they only accept early bookings… My aunt said every house will book at least 100 pieces for festival which is kinda crazy…
