Restaurant De Hunan 湖南湘菜馆 @ Kuchai Lama

Hunan Cuisine, also known as ‘Xiang’ Cuisine is renowned as one of the top cuisines in China.
What about Hunan Cuisine?
Is it similar to Sichuan food?
Actually I often mistaken Hunan meals with the ever popular Sichuan dishes.
Hunan cuisine features a fine and delicate appearance together with a hot and spicy flavour.
In contrast with the more widely recognized quick stir fry method of Chinese cooking, gentle simmering is an important feature of Hunan Cuisine. By preparing the food over a low heat and allowing it to simmer slowly the nutritional value is maintained while developing an exciting fresh flavour.
Also comparing to Sichuan dishes, Hunan cuisine offers a somewhat drier intensity.

We’ve heard a lot about Restaurant De Hunan being constantly attracting people from all over & at finally we made time for a visit!
We just took our taste buds on a journey of flavours yo!
Our thoughts?

  • Hot
  • Spicy
  • Not Oily
  • No numbing sensation (which I hate)

Among some of the must-try are signature dishes like the Hot and Spicy Steamed Fish Head in Hunan Specialty Style (which we missed cos it was sold out by dinner time! Imagine the crowd on a weekday!), sizzling skewered lamb and the Sauteed Cabbage with Dried Chilli. Boasting intense flavours & exquisite tastes, Restaurant De Hunan’s extensive menu of over a hundred dishes did wow us all.

With all these flavoursome dishes, you wouldn’t realize that you’ve taken extra rice LOL.
I don’t usually take much rice but I just did.

Also, you can choose the level of spiciness in each dish. We had NORMAL and thought they were alright for us. Can’t take too spicy. Have to be gentle on our tummy!
