Gangnam 88 Korean Fusion Restaurant @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Ever since South Korean musician Psy’s Gangnam Style has gone viral on YouTube, Gangnam has been a popular word in most people’s dictionary. People are more sensitive to Gangnam nowadays. And it was pretty clever to name a Korean restaurant over it.

Mont Kiara have been populated by Korean restaurants and one fairly new addition to the neighbourhood of SOHO KL would be Gangnam 88. Unlike many Korean BBQ restaurants around like the Little Korea nearby which is more homely and typical, Gangnam 88 sets a different ambiance creating a fresher & modern Korean restaurant look, somewhat similar to Namoo on the Park at Publika. However, Gangnam 88 is located on the 1st floor.

At Gangnam 88, you will be greeted by a modern Korean wave of simple wooden deco with K-Pop idols posters adorning their walls, zero hanging ventilators which made you think they don’t serve BBQ items (well, they do), a wall of Gangnam style hats, and LED screens playing latest K-Pop musics from famous idols like G-Dragon, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation and many more which I’m also not familiar with LOL.

Ban Chan (side dishes) are served with colourful plates, which makes everything here looks more youthful!
Their Ban Chan selections are not that many but we’re happy enough with the shares 🙂

BBQ Items
They do have BBQ items on their menu but they are cooked for you inside their kitchen and not the typical in-front-of-you style. You could say it’s not traditional enough but since they cater a modern & hip ambiance, we totally buy it as we wouldn’t smell like food after our meal. Yay!

So we ordered Pork 🙂
Dwaeji-galbi – RM49 (large portion)
Their tasty savoury sauce’s recipe is from South Korea’s Jeju Island restaurant, a traditional recipe for more than 30 years, they claimed. Very tasty 🙂

Samgyeapsal – RM49 (large portion)
Pork Belly without marination, I believe most people would still prefer the above one like we do. Still, pork belly texture was great that night.

Kimchi JJigae – RM20
I personally love Kimchi JJigae really a lot but this version was disappointing. Flavour was not intense & rich enough. Kinda diluted 🙁

Rabbokggi – RM33
A toss of spiciness with ddeokbokki and ramyun together!

Naksam Bulgogi – RM45
Octopus & pork belly is mixed together with spice rubbed over.

Kimchi Pajeon – RM30 **picture up soon**
Thickness definitely not dominated by flour & bagged with kimchi flavour.
Haemool Pajeon – RM30
Love their Seafood Pajeon! Fragrant pancake brimmed with seafood and not too floury.

Beer Chicken – RM50
One of their star dish that almost every table ordered, this is prepared from their secret recipe containing herbs and spices, living up with its distinctive Gangnam 88 flavour. Well, I think they put beer in it but we don’t taste beer though. Tasted similar to those salted chicken. Haha. But with crispier skin. I would have thought it’s special because it’s served standing and that’s it.
Please be patient as approximately 45min to 1 hour of preparation time is needed. Else, you could call to reserve first.

This place would be ideal for gatherings and birthday celebrations as they provide a more comfortable odour-free Korean dining with an ambiance as if you’re dining in a K-Pop restaurant. Haha.

Annyeonghaseyo! These are my “Korean” friends! LOL 😀

And so if you celebrate birthdays here, they will have birthday banners, sing you Korean birthday song & put you on their Facebook! 🙂
