Shucked Oyster & Seafood Bar @ BIG, Publika KL

Chris and I often talked quiet a lot about our Scottish adventure, even up till now especially about the food we had. And one of the most talked about dish was mussels as we claimed it’s the best mussels we had on earth. Haha. Sorry for been exaggerative 😛

Learning that KL has their first Oyster and Seafood Bar serving the finest imported fish and shellfish from the Southern Rock Seafood, we called up 3 weeks consecutively to check if they have any black mussels or dark shell mussels arrived. No kidding. 2 weeks of disappointment and finally we were told the wonderful mussels arrived one day. Kinda insane but when the craving drops by, we just gotta inject some clams dose 🙂

Shucked is easily located when you drop by Ben’s Independent Grocer (BIG), a kiosk that combines retail of their fresh seafood and bar counters to allow patrons to savour the seafood cooked on site. An ideal set-up for oysters & seafood lovers definitely.

Mussels “Shucked” Style – RM40
Cooked in French style, a creamy version with onions, shallots, butter & white wine
Perhaps we anticipated too much, this shucked style was the least expected. A little bit too salty to our liking. Claimed no salt added and perhaps due to the seawater. Nevermind. However, the sauce did not pair so well with the mussels too. Lack of white wine we guess. And most importantly, mussels we used to have doesn’t carry that “fishy” smell and we would usually whack one pot each but they do! Once a person told us: “Mussels are supposed to have a fresh clean smell, just like the ocean. If your mussels smell really fishy, that means they have gone bad!” Oh dear. Maybe they weren’t super fresh that day 🙁 Sad.

Smoked Mackerel Pate (Scotland) with Onion Marmalade – RM20
Luckily, our fishy palettes were compensated with these pate. Delicious smoked mackerel that complemented pretty well with the sweet onion marmalade. Just spread ’em on the cornish loaves 🙂

Grilled Salmon Croque Madame – RM25
Originated in French cafés and bars as a quick snack, a croque madame is served with a fried egg on top. This verson with grilled salmon was a satisfying one. Lightly salted, the fish is not overcooked too.

We didn’t manage to check out their oysters as we’re not big fans of them. Sorry for being out of the group. Haha.
For oyster lovers, you guys can give this place a go and in return let us know what you all think then 🙂
For us, our mussels adventure was quite a let down 🙁
