Hailam Kopitiam @ Lucky Garden, Bangsar

Kopitiams 咖啡店 are usually referred to as the Malaysian Chinese coffeeshops locally. Treated with fares like eggs, toast, and kaya, plus coffee and tea.
Like most gastronomic business, modern kopitiams have buckled up and speeded into the food industries reaching up to the patrons expectations & blending in well into our coffee culture nowadays. For instance places like Paparich, Old Town etc……

Google “kopitiam” and you’ll find Hailam Kopitiam one of the contenders.
What’s their call? You may wonder.
Affordable price & menu with extended choices.

If you’re around the Bangsar area and would love to save more for shopping instead, why not drop by the Hailam Kopitiam for a quick and affordable lunch/ dinner? Well, you could do breakfast too as their eggs, toast & a cuppa would not disappoint you. Special thanks to Wilson for having us over and changed our skeptical thoughts about the modern kopitiams 🙂

*Note: Food illustrations and descriptions below are solely for Bangsar’s Hailam Kopitiam (taste and quality may differ from other branches)

Let’s start with some of the drinks in their menu
Aromatic coffee & my favourite milk tea that was not too sweet. It always feel great to start your day off with a good cup of coffee.

Toasted Sliced Bread with Butter & Kaya – RM2.50
Butter Kaya would be my routine chant when it comes to ordering toast at my work place cafe.
And of course, the toast and kaya here aced it as they resembled the ones at the Imbi market according to the boss. Though we’ve not tried the version at Imbi, we thought the kaya was smooth and empowered with pandan flavours. Spreaded evenly onto the crispy toast, this would go well with half boiled eggs.

Tuna Egg Sandwich – RM5.20
Generous amount of tuna and eggs drew a smile on our face 🙂

Chicken Deluxe Sandwich – RM7.20
Brimmed with ingredients, this is good news for deli lovers

Hailam Chicken Chop with Original Sauce – RM14.20
Outplayed the others with their daily fresh chicken from the market, their chicken was battered evenly and deep fried till perfection. Looks Dry? Fret not as its juiciness is still retained within & their homemade sauce is something to shout about too. A lil’ sweet blending in the sourish tang = appetizing. You’ll find yourself dipping your fries in helplessly too 🙂

Nasi Lemak Special with Rendang Ayam – RM9.60
Fragrant coconut based rice and our local favourite rendang

DSC_2783-9

Hailam Tomyam Fried Rice – RM8.80
Fried rice was tossed with lotsa ‘wok hei’ and well flavoured with tomyam, making every spoonful a lil’ spicy & sour.

Hailam Fried Mee a.k.a. Hailam Mee – RM8.50

Mix Fried Mee a.k.a. Cantonese Fried Mee – RM7.80
Our favourite of the night as the gravy was nicely cooked & flavoured with eggs for smoother texture. The rice noodles were also smooth even after being stir-fried over high heat. A good plate of ‘Yin Yeong’

Fried Kuey Teow – RM7.80
Even though this preparation is not the Penang’s version of char kuey teow, their significant ‘wok-hei’ (cooked over the wok under high heat) contributed the winning point. Brimmed with generous amount of cockles too!

Curry Chicken Mee – RM8.80
For curry noodle lover who like their curry thick and concentrated, this would be your order. However, we thought this was a lil’ too salty to our liking.
