Miri, Sarawak Part 2: the Temple, the Bakery, the Tanjung & the Petroleum

Continued from Miri Part One

Breaking off from the plentiful noodles in Part 1.
Delving more into insights of Miri.
Didn’t even think that you could last a day in Miri besides food?
Here are some spots to hang around!
Miss Jean sure knows how to find great spots for us to kill time before food again.

1. San Ching Tian Taoist Temple
Known as one of the largest Taoist Temples in South-East Asia, this edifice of worshiping is located in Krokop (about 10 minutes drive from the city centre). This temple open its doors in year 2000 and is cared for by the Taoist priests.

2. Chop Chin Leong Confectionery
Modify your habitual gifts. Get some pastry from here as souvenirs for family and friends besides Sarawak peppers!
This confectionery is well established in Miri for numerous years and I believe it’s more than a decade! Nestled in a house-like aged construction, it created a sense of delicious-traditional-taste.
Highly recommended by Miss Jean, it was a must-drop by stop for us.

Kuih Pong and Green Bean Pastry were some good bites to get home.

Taking a wee tour around the confectionery.

According to Miss Jean, she has been seeing the same lady kneading dough all these years since she was young.

3. Petroleum Museum
The Grand Old Lady on Canadian Hill
Malaysia’s first inland oil drilling platform and one of Sarawak’s most important historical monuments. This landmark is about 30 meters high, next to a museum-cum-information centre joint ventured between Sarawak, Shell Malaysia and Petronas.
Grand Old Lady stands majestically perched on top of Bukit Telaga Minyak (Canada Hill) overlooking the town of Miri. She witness rapid development which had taken place over the last 100 years. Grand Old Lady is not a frail figure of an old woman but Miri’s Number 1 oil well, the first cable-tool oil well in the country, a ‘mother’ who milked a poor country to a prosperous nation.

4. Sunset at Tanjung Lobang (Hole in the Cliff)
Miss Jean is well known as a romantic young lady. What romantic & idealistic activity could be harmonized together with Miri? Sunset is one of them 🙂
Enjoy the beautiful sunset and feel the cool sea breeze as you listen to the sound of the splashing waves.

5. Dinner at Taman Selera
Besides the golden sand beach, children’s playground and outdoor facilities, there is an open air hawker center which is a popular eating place with all sorts of delightful local food.
Taman Selera is located in Tanjung Lobang. After some high spirits sunset talks by Miss Jean, we headed to Taman Selera to have dinner with another Miri-an, Adolphus. The place was kinda dark, but their food was pleasant. Go for Stall No.1 or No.7, recommended by our both lovely Miri friends.

Midin – fern like vegetable. Stir-fried with sambal belacan.

IMG_2637
Chicken, Pork, Beef and Mutton Satays – the pork satay was such a delicious babe.

Deep Fried Squid

Cockles with Lemongrass – get your hands dirty and be prepared for gurgling while drawing in the gravy and freeing the cockles into your mouth.

Grilled Sting Ray with yummylicious sauce adding moistness and flavours 🙂

Miss Jean brought us to the HandyCraft center for some home-made souvenirs too.
I thought there’ll be no more place for discovery after all these.
The resourceful Miss Jean proved us wrong.
More exploration in the next part.

How was your Raya break people? Or are you still on leave? 🙂
